Ahmedabad’s Operations Control Centre for the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is a high technology rail command environment overseeing the 1506 km WDFC. As one of the corridor’s key operational centres, the facility includes a large format panoramic video wall for real time network visualisation, asset monitoring, alarm handling and coordinated rail operations.
The room operates in a doubleheight volume with a glazed rear viewing gallery, accommodating multiple rows of operators and supervisory personnel in a tiered auditorium type arrangement. Our role was focused on delivering an ergonomically compliant, glare controlled, acoustically balanced, functionally efficient and architecturally integrated command room environment suited to prolonged mission critical use.
The client required a control room capable of supporting continuous corridor monitoring through a very large front facing LED video wall while accommodating multiple rows of operators and supervisory personnel with controlled movement throughout the room. The double height volume and glazed rear viewing gallery introduced simultaneous design challenges around hierarchical viewing angles, screen appropriate lux levels, glare free visual conditions, acoustic control, thermal comfort without direct air throw and safe operator circulation.
The requirement also extended to maintaining clear communication between operators and the Chief Controller and aligning the overall environment with best practices in ergonomic planning and environmental comfort.
ISO 11064-aligned ergonomic planning and architectural interior design covering task analysis, operational workflow assessment and viewing angle studies were included by us for our client .Console placement, multi row operational planning, supervisor and Chief Controller positioning, emergency exit planning, zone wise dimmable lighting and glare control strategy were delivered as a part of our services.
The scope also included acoustic and reverberation studies with selective deployment of sound-absorbing finishes, HVAC integration planning for operator comfort and LED wall heat management and material recommendations for low glare and functional durability.
The design reduced the risk of neck, back and visual fatigue by establishing clear viewing hierarchies and stable visual conditions across all operator rows. Glare control planning improved readability of both local monitors and the large format display. The acoustic material strategy improved speech intelligibility and reduced echo, supporting clearer communication despite the room’s scale and glazing. HVAC coordination ensured stable conditioned air reached operator seating zones without direct air throw, improving thermal comfort during long duration shifts. Low VOC material selection further supported operator health and wellbeing.
A functionally robust, ergonomically compliant, glare controlled, acoustically balanced and aesthetically integrated command centre suited to mission critical rail operations. The space supported continuous monitoring, reduced operator discomfort, strengthened communication quality and created a more disciplined operational setting for both routine and high attention scenarios.
The design was developed through a structured process combining task analysis, workflow, hierarchy mapping, sightline and viewing angle studies. Lux level definition, zone wise dimming strategy, reverberation studies and acoustic material deployment were studied and then delivered.
HVAC coordination for both operator comfort and equipment side along with thermal response, safety and circulation planning were achieved by iterative design verification and validation against ergonomic performance principles.
